Alexandra Butler is a trained pathologist who heads up the Human Tissue Core of the LHIRC. Her work emphasizes human pancreas studies in both type-1 and type-2 diabetes. Her work established that there is a major deficit in beta cells in humans with type-2 diabetes, and that islet turnover continues in adult humans.
